Creating an Unforgettable Publishing Party

If your class just completed the incredible feat of writing and publishing a class book, congratulations! This milestone deserves a celebration! What better way to commemorate your students’ hard work than with a publishing party? A classroom publishing party is not only fun, but also a meaningful way to build confidence in young writers and connect families with the classroom experience.

I wanted to share how we turned our first-grade publishing party into a memorable event for students, families, and teachers, complete with themed snacks, a heartwarming book reading, and a free printable for your own party!

Setting the Scene for a Publishing Party

We transformed our classroom into a cozy book nook by displaying a bookcase backdrop with our published class book displayed prominently. We added a big comfy chair and a lamp. (*The following year we added some plants to add to the library theme.)

Simple set up with a backdrop and a reading chair.

Outside of the classroom we set up photo opportunities with balloons and a red carpet. The simple backdrops made our school and classroom photo ready for families.

Each student was thrilled to see their name and writing in the book, and they couldn’t wait to share their page with an audience.

The Main Event: Students Read Their Work

The heart of the publishing party was the book reading. Each child took a turn reading their page aloud to the group. This was such a proud moment for my students, and the supportive audience of parents and families made it even more special.

To keep things flowing smoothly, we practiced reading in class the week before. Encouraging students to use loud, clear voices helped them shine on the big day.

Celebratory Snacks

What’s a party without snacks? We had a table of treats that tied perfectly into our book theme. Here’s what was served:

  • Gummy Worms: We labeled them “Book Worms” (grab the free label template below!)
  • Cupcakes: Decorated with “Published Author” toppers
  • Juice Boxes and Water: For a refreshing drink station
  • Cookies and Fruit: For variety and some healthy options

The themed snacks were a hit with both kids and adults, adding a playful touch to the celebration.

Why a Publishing Party Matters

This event was about more than just snacks and applause. This was about celebrating creativity, teamwork, and the hard work of our students. Hosting a publishing party gave families a chance to connect with their child’s learning in a unique and meaningful way. It also showed students that their words and ideas matter. We want to help nurture a lifelong love for writing.
